Brought to the Cape through the spice trade and centuries of enslaved peoples from Southeast Asia, Cape Malay herbal tradition fuses local fynbos plants with rempah spices — turmeric, clove, ginger — into a uniquely South African healing system.

Zulu traditional medicine (muthi) is one of the richest in Africa. Inyangas and izinyanga have refined their understanding of plants like umhlonyane, umthombo wenyoka and fever tea across centuries of practice.
